In the summer of 2021 Valve(the parent company of Steam) got the whole gaming world excited when they announced their handheld console the Steamdeck. Now it's here and this is what I think of it.

The User Interface (UI/UX)

The Steamdeck’s user interface uses the classic steam colors (Black and Blue) while still having a modern and clean look. The menus are easily understandable and can be all navigated using the touch screen or the joysticks letting you choose which input method you prefer.

Almost every action on the Steamdeck is complimented by a satisfying sound and occasionally some haptic feedback which unlike many other reviewers I find quite good.

The only letdown on the user interface side of things is the store because it uses the steam website and therefore takes a while to load whenever a button is pressed.

The Hardware

The hardware of the Steamdeck is great. Not only does it have good ergonomics and a good weight for its size but it also has great internals featuring an AMD processor with RDNA 2 integrated graphics, 16 GB of RAM, Bluetooth, wifi, an SD card slot, and 64, 256, or 512 GB of storage depending on the model.

The Steamdeck also has lots of ways for you to control the games you play including two joysticks, left and right triggers, left and right buttons, a d-pad, a b x y buttons, 4 extra buttons on the back, two touchpads, gyro controls, and a touch screen.

How do the Games feel?

On the Steamdeck most Indie titles play great with no stutters or sudden fps drops. Triple-A games like Forza Horizon 5 and Apex Legends also work although stutters may occur and logging in to Apex legends requires the user to manually make the keyboard appear.

An amazing feature of the Steamdeck that is really useful in games is the built-in fps counter which can be configured to display different amounts of information.

Conclusion

After having used the steam deck for a couple of days now I think it's an amazing console that still needs some work on the software side of things. I think Valve did a great job merging the openness of a PC with the user-friendliness of a console.
