Facebook’s Metaverse is not the Future

It has now been many months since Meta(Facebook) announced its decision to head in a new direction and focus its resources on creating a metaverse. That decision is now slowly proving itself to be a bad one.

The idea of a Metaverse has been around for a long time now and it has various definitions. Some define it as a digital place people can hang out, which would mean that Metaverses have already existed for a long time. Others define it as a digital world in which you can work, socialize, and have fun.

Although the second definition sounds like something new, it is not. Games like Roblox with entire roleplaying communities have also existed for a long time now and Meta was just the first to call it a Metaverse.

Initially when Facebook announced its vision of a Metaverse many were excited, hoping for a Metaverse like in the movie Ready Player One. But Facebook did nothing but disappoint when they launched Horizon Worlds a Roblox clone in VR with barely any players because you had to have an Oculus VR headset to play.

The reason we cannot replicate Ready Player One is that we can’t give everyone a free VR headset and we cant have thousands of people all together interacting with a digital world. That's why horizon worlds just ended up being a boring VR game no one plays.

To make a Metaverse possible you would have to make it peer to peer and decentralized. It would have to be able to run on most devices and most importantly it would have to be owned by us all and not a central company.

To conclude I believe that Facebook’s Metaverse is not the future and may even result at the end of Facebook as a major tech giant.
